FEED A FAMILY FOR A WEEK ...

Select a menu to feed a family of four (two adults and two children) for a week. The menu should include variety and something for each meal, breakfast, lunch and dinner, that you would be prepared to eat. It also needs to include additional items for morning and afternoon tea and any other food and drinks required.

Each meal should be listed and details regarding items required listed. All materials that are needed to prepare the food should be included, this does not include electricity, water, refrigeration and the like which is paid for as part of other household bills, neither does it include any items used in preparation which can be washed and re-used such as bowls, pans, cutlery. Any other items such as spices, salt, oil which are used in the preparation must be included.

A spreadsheet should be used to summarize the ingredients required and their cost.

You need to consider carefully what your typical family eats in a week, items such as oil for cooking, drinks for example coffee and snacks must be included. If you use only part of a product during the week, you should produce one total cost which includes the whole cost of such items and one total cost which includes only the portion used of such items. This will therefore reflect the actual weekly outgoings on one hand and the cost of the items utilised on the other hand.

Please take time to consider a varied and healthy menu. Prices can be taken from the Countdown website. I expect all meals to be prepared - no take-outs or meals out.

Credit will be given for extra details including recipes.

Finally, look back at the take home pay which you calculated last week and work out for A, B and your averages in C what percentage of take home pay would be spent on feeding the family of four each week.

The final submission must include (as an absolute minimum) project planning, a list of all items required during the week and their total cost (both versions), as well as the weekly menu plus the percentage of take home pay utilized based on your results from the previous wage on take home pay. If you did not complete the take home pay calculations they need to be done, I will normally be available for conferencing during maths time in Room 14, except on Fridays, if you need assistance.

All students are expected to conference with Mrs Attard in Room 14 or one of the Team pods (depending on where she is each day) at least twice a week during maths time for the duration of this assignment.

EXTENSION

(Optional) Consider what might need to change if any or all of the following restrictions were imposed:

1. Limited weekly budget of $150
2. Requirement that all members of the family ate their five portions or fruit and vegetables each day
3. All grocery items must be purchased in a single visit to the supermarket at the start of the week

Work is due Monday 3th November, all students are expected to complete at least all the work up to the extension.

Any student who has completed the above and the homework should conference with Mrs Attard at the first opportunity to create an Individual Learning Plan. The plan will cover continuing to work on the Numeracy Certificates and other appropriate topics. It will also arrange times to complete the appropriate tests and worksheets.
